News You Can Use
New updates are available for download that "WILL NOT BE PROVIDED" via regular Adobe Updater!
Check the list below for current additional updates.
This is a good time to install updates for CS5 and CS5.5 Production Premium applications, since a lot
of significant updates have recently been released:

  • After Effects CS5.5 (10.5.1) update
  • Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.4) update
  • After Effects CS5 (10.0.2) update
  • Adobe Media Encoder CS5 (5.0.1) update (Mac OS and Windows)
  • Oh, and don’t forget the After Effects CS4 (9.0.3) update.

Courtesy of Adobe.com.
Today, the After Effects CS5.5 (10.5.1) update was released.

This update is not available through the automatic update mechanism. You must download the update
packages from the download pages for
Windows or Mac OS, using the “Adobe After Effects CS5.5
10.5.1 Update” links. The links are not at the top of the page, where I expected to find them.

Windows                                                      MAC OS

Important: You must choose the correct patcher based on your original installation type: use the
“Electronic Download” update package if you installed from a download; use the “Retail DVD” update
package if you installed from a disc. (I found it confusing that the word ‘trial’ appears in the file name
of the “Electronic Download” package, but that is indeed the correct package for updating the full
version.)

You should also install other recent updates to your Adobe software by choosing Help > Updates.

We have also been working with several providers of plug-ins, codecs, and hardware devices to
assist them in updating their software to fix some errors and crashes. Please take this opportunity to
download and install updated codecs, plug-ins, and drivers from these providers, as relevant to your
work.

If you have any problems with this update, or if you have bugs to report after applying the update, let
us know by sending feedback or coming to the After Effects forum. Don’t ask questions in the
comments on this blog post, which fewer people will see.

bug fixes
When entering large amounts of text in a text layer, the text would not appear and the image would
not be rendered until you moved the mouse pointer out of the Composition panel. This is fixed.

Today, the Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.4) update was released.

If Adobe Application Manager hasn’t already told you about this, go ahead and check for new updates
for Premiere Pro CS5 by choosing Help > Updates.

Later—but not yet—you’ll be able to directly download the update packages from the download pages
for
Windows or Mac OS, using the “Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 5.0.4 update” link. This page will be
updated when those direct downloads are available.

Windows                                                      MAC OS

This Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.4) update itself includes one bug fix, which addresses a problem
with crashes and other problems on Mac computers with ATI cards. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 does
not have this problem.

Since updates are cumulative, installing the CS5 (5.0.4) update will also give you the many, many fixes
and improvements in the
CS5 (5.0.3) and CS5 (5.0.2) updates. Of course, you can also get these
improvements and many more by upgrading to
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5.

If you have difficulty with this update, please bring questions and issues to the
Adobe Premiere Pro
forum. Don’t ask questions in the comments on this blog post, which fewer people will see.

We have also been working with several providers of plug-ins, codecs, and hardware devices to
assist them in updating their software to fix some errors and crashes. Please take this opportunity to
download and install updated codecs, plug-ins, and drivers from these providers, as relevant to your
work.

Since the update we cannot open any of our old projects. This is terrible, a rollback to 5.0.3 is not
possible. We have already deleted the ApplicationSettings/ and Preferences/ folders in the local user’
s directory.

As it says in the post above, bring issues with the update to the forum, and we’ll help you there.

The After Effects CS5 (10.0.2) update has been released.

Ideally, you should check for and install updates by choosing Help > Updates from within After Effects
(or another CS5 application).

If the automatic update doesn’t work, try the manual update. You can download the update packages
from the download pages for Windows or Mac OS, using the “Adobe After Effects 10.0.2 update” link.
The links are not at the top of the page, where I expected to find them.

Important: If you do download and install manuall, you must choose the correct patcher based on your

download; use the “Retail DVD” update package if you installed from a disc. (I found it confusing that
the word ‘trial’ appears in the file name of the “Electronic Download” package, but that is indeed the

bug fixes

Here’s a complete list of things that we fixed in this update.

  • After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) showed multiple instances of an “Unexpected data type” error when
opening a project containing a missing effect.
  • After Effects crashed when using the Directional Blur effect on a computer with 16 or more
logical processor cores (i.e., counting virtual cores created by hyperthreading).
  • After Effects crashed when opening a composition created by Automatic Duck Pro Import AE.

The After Effects CS5 (10.0.2) update is cumulative with the After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update. I.e., the
10.0.2 update includes all of the fixes in the
10.0.1 update.

Note that we were able to find and fix these problems because of the great feedback that we got
when we asked people to use the crash reporter. Please keep doing so. And don’t hesitate to file
bugs and send feature requests.

Other software updates known to address crashing problems with After Effects

If you use the Colorista II plug-in, be sure to update it to the most recent version.

If you use Trapcode Particular, be sure to install the most recent version.

We have also been working with several providers of plug-ins, codecs, and hardware devices (such
as Cineform and BlackMagic) to assist them in updating their software to fix some errors and crashes.
Please take this opportunity to download and install updated codecs, plug-ins, and drivers from these
providers, as relevant to your work.

known issues

  • Possible hang on start if firewall or other software (such as ZoneAlarm or FileMaker) blocks
communication with After Effects and related components. (See this Technical Support
document for more information and solutions.)
  • Blocky artifacts in RGB color channels using Canon 5D MKII footage.
  • BMP footage in a CS4 project opens as missing footage. Workaround: Relink footage after
    opening.
  • RED (R3D) color science between versions: Projects saved in After Effects CS5 (10.0.0) that use
the existing RED color science will use the new color science (version 2) when opened in After
Effects CS5 (10.0.1 or 10.0.2). Also, RED settings are not retained if a project saved by After
Effects CS5 (10.0.1 or 10.0.2) is opened in After Effects CS5 (10.0.0). If you are using R3D footage
in a multiple-machine environment, make sure all machines are using the same version of After
    Effects.
  • If another application acquires the RED ROCKET card before After Effects does, After Effects will
fall back to software (non-ROCKET) rendering, with no warning message.

Wow, that’s customer service!
I won’t be doing the 10.0.2 update till it’s ready to grab from within the application. For some reason,
my Adobe Updater has been asleep for the last few months.

Because there hasn’t been any updates released.

BTW, since when is FileMaker a firewall app?

[reply from
TMGK: It's not that FileMaker is a firewall application; rather, it sometimes can use a port
that is needed by another application, blocking the other application.]

I just update from 10.0.0 and this bug is still there :
Couldn’t snap keyframes or layer markers (using Shift-drag) to layer, current-time indicator, or work
area at start of composition.
I know it was supposed to be fixed with 10.0.1
Or maybe there’s a way to activate/desactivate this function but I don’t know how to activate it.

Ideally, you should check for and install updates by choosing Help > Updates from within After Effects
CS4 (or another CS4 application).

If for some reason you can’t use the automatic updater, you can download the update package
(patcher) from the Adobe website.

Windows                                                      MAC OS

Important: Users of After Effects CS4 for Windows who are manually downloading and installing the
patcher must choose the correct patcher based on the original installation scenario: If you installed
After Effects CS4 as a standalone product or from a Creative Suite 4 (CS4) package, then use
AfterEffects-9.0.3-mul-AdobeUpdate.zip. If you installed After Effects CS4 as part of a Creative Suite 5
(CS5) Production Premium or CS5 Master Collection package, then use
AfterEffects-9.0.3-mul-
AdobeUpdate-FromCS5Suite.zip. Users of After Effects CS4 for Mac OSX should all use AfterEffects-
9.0.3-mul-AdobeUpdate.dmg.

By the way, in case you didn’t already know: Adobe provides After Effects CS4 and Premiere Pro CS4
in the CS5 Master Collection and CS5 Production Premium packages for Windows, so that users with
32-bit operating systems will have versions of After Effects and Premiere Pro that will work on their
computers. After Effects CS5 and Premiere Pro CS5 are 64-bit applications and therefore won’t run on
32-bit operating systems. See “
32-bit vs. 64-bit support in Creative Suite 5″.

If you have any problems with this update, or if you have bugs to report after applying the update, let
us know by sending feedback or coming to the After Effects forum. Don’t ask questions in the
comments on this blog post, which fewer people will see.

bug fixes

  • A “locking existing frames” message appeared and remained for a long time before a RAM
    preview would begin.

  • A conflict between Wacom drivers and After Effects severely decreased performance. Wacom
has updated their drivers, and the After Effects CS4 (9.0.3) update should fix the issue on the
    After Effects side.

  • Background rendering processes were not being correctly shut down when aerender quit.

  • A crash caused by dragging and dropping on Mac OSX v10.5.x has been fixed.

  • A memory problem that caused assorted crashes has been fixed.

Note that we were able to find and fix a lot of these problems because of the great feedback that we
got when we asked people to use the
crash reporter. Please keep doing so. And don’t hesitate to file
bugs and send feature requests.

The After Effects CS4 (9.0.3) update is cumulative with the
After Effects CS4 (9.0.2) update, meaning
that all of the fixes in the 9.0.2 update will also be applied by the 9.0.3 update.

Of course, these fixes are also incorporated into After Effects CS5. By the way, if you are also using
After Effects CS5, be sure to install the
After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update.

Other software updates known to address crashing problems with After Effects

If you use the Optical Flares plug-in, be sure to update it to the most recent version.

If you use After Effects on Mac OSX v10.6.4,
be sure to apply the graphics update from Apple.

If you use an ATI graphics card, note that the ATI Catalyst 10.9 driver update fixes an OpenGL crash in
After Effects.
Update your drivers.

Nice work, Todd et. al.. I thought Adobe had written off CS4, and I was waiting patiently for CS5 to be
ready for primetime (I always give new releases about 6 months). Thanks for all your hard work, and
for maintaining the open dialogue which Adobe has always had with its’ users.

I manually downloaded the 9.0.3 update because the HELP>UPDATES… always failed. After
downloading the instructions from the Adobe website are :

1. Download the .zip file and save it to a folder on your computer.
2. Quit After Effects CS4 if it is running.
3. Use the operating system or a utility such as WinZip or PKZIP to access the .zip file’s contents, and
then double-click the AdobePatchInstaller.exe file to launch the patcher.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions. There might be a slight delay before the update progress meter
starts moving

The only problem I found was AdobePatchInstaller.exe DOES NOT exists in the .zip file. The only .exe
file is Setup.exe and it failed w/ an “installation failed” message.

Any ideas?
